Prophecy of the Captivity

25 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the ^(A)fourth year of ^(B)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the ^(C)first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), ² the word which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the ^(D)people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ³ “From the ^(E)thirteenth year of ^(F)Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, ^[a]these ^(G)twenty-three years the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you ^(H)again and again, but you have not listened. ⁴ And the Lord has sent to you all His ^(I)servants the prophets again and again, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear, ⁵ saying, ‘^(J)Turn now, everyone from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and live on the land which the Lord has given to you and your forefathers ^(K)forever and ever; ⁶ and ^(L)do not follow other gods to ^[b]serve them and to ^[c]worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands, then I will do you no harm.’ ⁷ Yet you have not listened to Me,” declares the Lord, “in order to ^(M)provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.

⁸ “Therefore this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words, ⁹ behold, I will ^(N)send and take all the families of the north,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, ^(O)My servant, and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations; and I will ^[d]completely destroy them and ^(P)make them an object of horror and ^[e]hissing, and an everlasting place of ruins. ¹⁰ Moreover, I will ^(Q)eliminate from them the voice of jubilation and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the ^(R)sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. ^11 (S)This entire land will be a place of ruins and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for ^(T)seventy years.

Babylon Will Be Judged

¹² ‘Then it will be ^(U)when seventy years are completed I will ^(V)punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares the Lord, ‘for their wrongdoing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and ^(W)I will make it an everlasting desolation. ¹³ I will bring upon that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in ^(X)this book which Jeremiah has prophesied against ^(Y)all the nations. ¹⁴ (^[f]For ^(Z)many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even them; and I will ^(AA)repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.)’”

Marriage like Christ and the Church

^22 (A)Wives, ^(B)subject yourselves to your own husbands, ^(C)as to the Lord. ²³ For ^(D)the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the ^(E)head of the church, He Himself ^(F)being the Savior of the body. ²⁴ But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

^25 (G)Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and ^(H)gave Himself up for her, ^26 (I)so that He might sanctify her, having ^(J)cleansed her by the ^(K)washing of water with ^(L)the word, ²⁷ that He might ^(M)present to Himself the church ^[a]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be ^(N)holy and blameless. ²⁸ So husbands also ought to ^(O)love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; ²⁹ for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, ³⁰ because we are ^(P)parts of His ^(Q)body. ^31 (R)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. ³² This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. ³³ Nevertheless, as for you individually, each husband is to ^(S)love his own wife the same as himself, and the wife must see to it that she ^(T)respects her husband.

² this is what the Lord has said to me: “Make for yourself ^(A)restraints and ^(B)yokes and put them on your neck, ³ and send ^[a]word to the king of ^(C)Edom, the king of ^(D)Moab, the king of the sons of ^(E)Ammon, the king of ^(F)Tyre, and to the king of ^(G)Sidon ^[b]by the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. ⁴ Order them to go to their masters, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “This is what you shall say to your masters: ⁵ ‘^(H)I have made the earth, mankind, and the animals which are on the face of the earth ^(I)by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and I will ^(J)give it to the one who is ^[c]pleasing in My sight. ⁶ And now I ^(K)have handed all these lands over to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, ^(L)My servant, and I have also given him the ^(M)animals of the field to serve him. ^7 (N)All the nations shall serve him and his son and his grandson ^(O)until the time of his own land comes; then ^(P)many nations and great kings will ^[d]make him their servant.

⁸ ‘And it will be that the nation or the kingdom which ^(Q)will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and will not put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the ^(R)sword, with famine, and with plague,’ declares the Lord, ‘until I have eliminated ^[e]it by his hand. ⁹ And as for you, ^(S)do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your ^[f]dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers who talk to you, saying, “You will not serve the king of Babylon.” ¹⁰ For they are prophesying a ^(T)lie to you in order to ^(U)remove you far from your land; and I will drive you away and you will perish. ¹¹ But the nation that will ^(V)bring its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will ^(W)let remain on its land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and they will cultivate it and live in it.’”’”

¹² I spoke words like all these to ^(X)Zedekiah king of Judah, saying, “Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him and his people, and live! ¹³ Why should you ^(Y)die, you and your people, by the sword, famine, and plague, as the Lord has spoken to the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon? ¹⁴ So ^(Z)do not listen to the words of the prophets who talk to you, saying, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying a ^(AA)lie to you; ¹⁵ for ^(AB)I have not sent them,” declares the Lord, “but they are ^(AC)prophesying falsely in My name, so that I will ^(AD)drive you away and that you will perish, ^(AE)you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”

¹⁶ Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, “Behold, the ^(AF)vessels of the Lord’s house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon”; for they are prophesying a ^(AG)lie to you. ¹⁷ Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon, and live! Why should this city ^(AH)become a place of ruins? ¹⁸ But ^(AI)if they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is with them, have them now ^(AJ)plead with the Lord of armies that the vessels which are left in the house of the Lord and the house of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem do not go to Babylon. ¹⁹ For this is what the Lord of armies says concerning the ^(AK)pillars, concerning the ^[g]sea, concerning the kettle stands, and concerning the rest of the vessels that are left in this city, ²⁰ which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take when he ^(AL)led into exile Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem— ²¹ Yes, this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, says concerning the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord and in the house of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem: ²² “They will be ^(AM)brought to Babylon and will be there until the ^(AN)day I visit them,” declares the Lord. “Then I will ^(AO)bring them ^[h]back and restore them to this place.”’”

The Adulterous Woman

8 But Jesus went to ^(A)the Mount of Olives. ² And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and ^(B)He sat down and began teaching them. ³ Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, ⁴ they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. ⁵ Now in the Law, ^(C)Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” ⁶ Now they were saying this to ^(D)test Him, ^(E)so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. ⁷ When they persisted in asking Him, ^(F)He straightened up and said to them, “^(G)He who is without sin among you, let him be the ^(H)first to throw a stone at her.” ⁸ And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. ⁹ Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard. ¹⁰ And ^(I)straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” ¹¹ She said, “No one, ^[a]Lord.” And Jesus said, “^(J)I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not ^(K)sin any longer.”]]

Jesus Is the Light of the World

¹² Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “^(L)I am the Light of the world; ^(M)the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” ¹³ So the Pharisees said to Him, “^(N)You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not ^[b]true.” ¹⁴ Jesus answered and said to them, “^(O)Even if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is ^[c]true, because I know ^(P)where I came from and where I am going; but ^(Q)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. ^15 (R)You judge ^[d]according to the flesh; ^(S)I am not judging anyone. ¹⁶ But even ^(T)if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. ¹⁷ Even in ^(U)your Law it has been written that the testimony of ^(V)two people is ^[e]true. ¹⁸ I am He who testifies about Myself, and ^(W)the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” ¹⁹ So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; ^(X)if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” ²⁰ These words He spoke ^[f]in ^(Y)the treasury, as ^(Z)He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because ^(AA)His hour had not yet come.

²¹ Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and ^(AB)you will look for Me, and ^(AC)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” ²² So ^(AD)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘^(AE)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” ²³ And He was saying to them, “^(AF)You are from below, I am from above; ^(AG)you are of this world, ^(AH)I am not of this world. ²⁴ Therefore I said to you that you ^(AI)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that ^[g](AJ)I am, ^(AK)you will die in your sins.” ²⁵ Then they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “^[h]What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? ²⁶ I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but ^(AL)He who sent Me is true; and ^(AM)the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.” ²⁷ They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father. ²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you ^(AN)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that ^[i](AO)I am, and ^(AP)I do nothing ^[j]on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me. ²⁹ And He who sent Me is with Me; ^(AQ)He ^[k]has not left Me alone, for ^(AR)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” ³⁰ As He said these things, ^(AS)many came to believe in Him.
